It’s National Wine Day! Don’t let the fact that it’s on a Tuesday dissuade you from partaking. Here are 5 simple ways to celebrate.

  1. Try Something New

Not that you need an excuse, but today’s a great day to try something new like a new varietal or a region you haven’t explored. Faithful to Pinot? Try a Burgundy. Enjoy Sauvignon Blanc? Sample a Sancerre. Think Riesling is too sweet? Think again. Explore the crisp minerality of a dry Riesling like Dr. Loosen Dr. L Riesling from Mosel Germany or Kung Foo Girl from Washington State.

  2. Gift a Bottle

Surprise the wine enthusiast in your life with an unexpected gift of one of their favorites. Don’t know what to buy? Give them a gift certificate to their favorite wine bar or wine shop.

  3. Freeze It

What?? Yes! If, by chance, you happen not to finish the bottle, don’t let your leftovers waste away in the fridge. Pour it into an ice cube tray for future cooking. Think sauces and vinaigrette.

  4. Enjoy the Perfect Pairing

You may be surprised to know that white with fish and red with meat IS NOT always the best rule. Grill up your fare of choice tonight or for the holiday weekend with these Grilling and Wine Pairing Tips.

  5. Plant Some Grapes

Now don’t go running out digging holes. This is a process that requires some forethought, time and patience. But if you have someplace that you think would make the perfect spot then start with a soil test then consult with a grape grower to find the best grapes for your soil conditions. The Penn State Extension Ag Lab and Double A Vineyards are great places to start. Before you know it you too will have a backyard full of blue grow tubes!
